When it comes to the epidermis, it's a fact, alas that "the biggest visible skin change is in the 40s - right around age 45, plus or minus a couple of years," says Darrick Antell, M.D., a plastic and reconstructive surgeon on Park Avenue. "You begin to see wrinkles and loose skin around the jowls." If you're not contemplating surgery, you can do a lot by applying the fundamentals of skincare: moisurize religiously; always use a sunscreen of SPF 15-plus; avoid tanning (except chemically); and if you smoke, quit. "If someone smokes, you can really tell the difference, " says Dr. Antell. "It leads to dryness and vertical lines along the upper lip."
