What is Lipoma Removal?

Lipoma removal is a surgery that removes unwanted fatty lumps under the skin. Most lipomas are harmless, but they can become more noticeable, uncomfortable, or get in the way of daily life as they grow.

During surgery, Dr. Darrick Antell assesses the size, location, and features of each lipoma to determine the best approach to removal. He may use surgical excision or localized liposuction, aiming to reduce discomfort and scarring.

Lipoma removal is often done as an outpatient procedure, so you can get rid of unwanted growths and enjoy a smoother, more comfortable look.

What Are Lipomas?

Lipomas are unsightly masses of fatty tissue that can develop in various locations on the body, causing pain and discomfort and affecting your appearance. Lipomas are generally not dangerous, as they are most often benign (non-cancerous) growths, but occasionally they may contain cancerous cells (a liposarcoma). Lipomas are some of the most common growths on the human body. It’s not uncommon to have multiple lipomas, with some individuals developing hundreds of these growths.

As a lipoma grows or multiple lipomas develop, they can affect your range of motion, interfere with daily routines, and prevent you from enjoying physical activities.

Although they can develop anywhere on the body, lipomas most commonly appear on the:

  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Neck
  • Thighs
  • Underarm
  • Face

The cause of lipoma growth is not currently fully understood, but studies have shown that the development of lipomas may be associated with:

  • Genetics
  • Blunt force impact to the body
  • Medical conditions such as Gardner’s syndrome, Cowden syndrome, Madelung’s disease, and adiposis dolorosa

Although benign lipomas are not life-threatening, they can be painful and uncomfortable, especially if they grow into deeper muscle tissue and press on a nerve.

How Are Lipomas Removed?

Once a lipoma develops, it will not go away on its own and will often increase in size over time. Therefore, the only way to rid the body of this mass is through surgery. Lipomas are removed in an outpatient procedure typically under local anesthesia. However, depending on the size and location of the lipoma, twilight sedation may be used for your comfort.

There are two methods of lipoma removal, each appropriate to different sizes and conditions of lipoma:

  • Excision: The most common method of lipoma removal is to make a small incision and surgically remove the fatty tissue beneath the skin. After the lipoma is completely removed, the incision is closed with meticulously placed sutures. This technique typically yields the most successful outcome for complete removal.
  • Liposuction: If you have large lipomas, Dr. Antell can perform localized liposuction through a small incision to remove excess fatty tissue. Lipoma removal by liposuction is a minimally invasive technique with minimal scarring. However, liposuction does not guarantee complete removal, and the mass may regrow. Depending on the mass’s size, texture, and location, liposuction may not be advisable.

At your consultation, Dr. Antell will thoroughly evaluate your condition and determine the right procedure for you, provide all necessary details, and answer any questions.

Combining My Lipoma Removal with Other Procedures

If you have other cosmetic concerns, you can combine lipoma removal with another procedure for better results. At your consultation, Dr. Antell will review your needs and suggest a treatment plan that fits your goals.

You can have lipoma removal along with fibroma removal if you have several benign skin growths you want checked and taken out. Treating them all at once can help your skin look smoother and more even.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Lipoma Removal?

Anyone in good overall health is likely a candidate for lipoma removal. Lipoma removal is ideal for those who:

  • Suffer pain or discomfort at the site of the growth
  • Experience restricted motion or are physically hindered
  • Feel embarrassed by the appearance
  • Want to be free of the condition

What Are the Benefits of Lipoma Removal?

Lipoma removal can help improve both how you look and feel if you are bothered by fatty lumps. Some benefits include:

  • Improved body shape and appearance: Removing visible lipomas can make your skin look smoother and more even by reducing lumps under the skin.
  • Relief from pain and discomfort: Large lipomas or those near nerves can cause pressure or tenderness. Removing them can help ease these symptoms.
  • Restored movement and comfort: If lipomas make it hard to move or perform daily tasks, removing them can help you return to your normal routine.
  • Increased confidence: Many people feel self-conscious about visible lumps. Removing lipomas can help you feel better about your appearance.
  • Minimized scarring: Dr. Antell uses careful surgical techniques and places incisions thoughtfully to minimize scarring.

What Can I Expect During My Consultation?

During your initial consultation at his New York City practice, Dr. Antell will perform a comprehensive evaluation of both your general health and the location, condition, and size of the lipoma or lipomas. The surgery will be performed with the techniques best suited to remove your lipomas with the least discomfort, risk, and recovery time.

Dr. Antell will explain the best surgery option for removing the lipoma, the risks associated with this surgery, and the recovery process. During your initial consultation, be sure to inform Dr. Antell if you smoke and if you’re taking any medications, vitamins, or other drugs. Don’t hesitate to ask Dr. Antell any questions about the procedure, recovery, and expected outcome.

When Can Dr. Antell Remove My Lipomas?

In most cases, lipoma removal can be performed on the same day as your consultation and may require only local anesthesia. However, if the lipomas are larger or are in a more challenging location, your surgery will be scheduled in the near future.

What Type of Anesthesia is Used?

Lipoma removal surgery is typically performed using local anesthesia alone. However, when appropriate, sedation (also known as twilight anesthesia) may be recommended to enhance your comfort. Dr. Antell will discuss whether sedation is indicated for your procedure during your consultation.

What to Expect on the Day of Lipoma Removal Surgery

On the day of your procedure, Dr. Antell and his team will make sure you are comfortable and ready before starting. Most lipoma removals use local anesthesia so that you will be awake, but the area will be fully numb.

Depending on how many lipomas you have, their size, and where they are located, twilight sedation may be recommended for added comfort. Dr. Antell will choose between surgical excision and liposuction based on your needs and goals.

After the lipoma is removed, the incision will be closed with careful stitches to promote healing and reduce scarring. Before you leave, you will get clear aftercare instructions to help you recover smoothly.

Your Guide to Post-Lipoma Removal Care

Lipoma removal is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day after the surgery. The vast majority of lipomas can be removed under local anesthesia, meaning you can arrive on your own, have the procedure, and return home unescorted. The incision site will typically be covered with a small sterile dressing that will stay in place for 1 to 7 days.

A tissue sample will be sent to a laboratory for testing to confirm the diagnosis of a lipoma and ensure your health and safety. A member of Dr. Antell’s staff will contact you as soon as the pathology results are complete.

A follow-up visit will typically be scheduled for one week after surgery so that Dr. Antell can observe the healing process and remove sutures if necessary. Patients can return to normal daily activities immediately but are usually asked to refrain from vigorous exercise for two to three days. Additional surgery is usually not required, as Dr. Antell is meticulous in removing the entire growth.

How Much Does Lipoma Removal Cost in New York City, NY?

The cost of lipoma removal in New York City depends on things like the size, number, and location of the lipomas. The type of surgery, anesthesia, and any extra procedures can also affect the price.

At your private consultation, Dr. Darrick Antell will review your needs and provide a treatment plan and a detailed cost estimate for your lipoma removal.
